ESA Project EPSILON
Die erste Mission der ESA-Astronautin Sophie Adenot zur Internationalen Raumstation (ISS) hat nun einen Namen: εpsilon. Der Missionsname und das Missionsabzeichen wurden heute auf der Pariser Luftfahrtschau von ESA-Generaldirektor Josef Aschbacher, dem französischen Präsidenten Emmanuel Macron und Sophie Adenot selbst bekannt gegeben. Sophie Adenot war per Videoübertragung aus den USA zugeschaltet, wo sie für ihren Raumflug trainiert.
Sophie Adenot ist eine der fünf Astronautinnen und Astronauten, die aus dem jüngsten ESA-Astronautenjahrgang 2022 ausgewählt wurden. Nach dem erfolgreichen Abschluss ihrer Grundausbildung im Frühjahr 2024 gab Josef Aschbacher während des Weltraumrats in Brüssel bekannt, dass Sophie und ihr Absolventenkollege Raphaël Liégois ihre ersten Missionen zur ISS erhalten haben. Diese sind derzeit für 2026 geplant.
Der Name εpsilon und das dazugehörige Abzeichen symbolisieren die Kraft kleiner, aber wirkungsvoller Beiträge und wie viele Teile zusammen ein Ganzes bilden. In der Mathematik steht „ε“ für etwas Kleines. Im Rahmen der umfassenden Gemeinschaftsarbeit der Weltraumforschung, an der Tausende von Beteiligten beteiligt sind, bleiben alle Rollen, auch die der Astronautin, klein, aber dennoch bedeutsam.
Während ihrer εpsilon-Mission wird Sophie zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Experimente durchführen, viele davon in europäischer Hand, medizinische Forschung betreiben, die Erdbeobachtung unterstützen und zum Betrieb und zur Wartung der Internationalen Raumstation beitragen.

The mission name and patch were announced today at the Paris Air Show by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Sophie Adenot, who joined remotely from the United States, where she is training for her spaceflight.

Sophie Adenot is one of the five astronauts selected from ESA’s most recent astronaut class of 2022. Following the successful completion of their basic training in spring 2024, Josef Aschbacher announced during the Space Council in Brussels that Sophie and fellow graduate Raphaël Liégois had been assigned their first missions to the International Space Station, currently planned for 2026.
The εpsilon name and patch reflect the power of small, yet impactful contributions and how multiple parts unite to create a whole. In mathematics, “ε” represents something small. In the extensive collaborative effort of space exploration, involving thousands of participants, all roles, including the astronaut’s role, stay small yet meaningful.
During her εpsilon mission, Sophie will perform numerous scientific experiments, many of them European, conduct medical research, support Earth observation and contribute to operations and maintenance aboard the International Space Station.

La première mission de l’astronaute de l’ESA Sophie Adenot à destination de la Station spatiale internationale a désormais un nom : εpsilon. Le nom et l’écusson de la mission ont été annoncés aujourd’hui au Salon du Bourget par le directeur général de l’ESA, Josef Aschbacher, le président français Emmanuel Macron et Sophie Adenot, qui participait à distance depuis les États-Unis où elle s’entraîne pour son vol spatial.
Sophie Adenot fait partie des cinq astronautes sélectionnés parmi la promotion 2022 de l’ESA. Après avoir brillamment achevé leur formation de base au printemps 2024, Josef Aschbacher a annoncé lors du Conseil spatial de Bruxelles que Sophie et son camarade Raphaël Liégois avaient été affectés à leur première mission à bord de la Station spatiale internationale, actuellement prévue pour 2026.
Le nom et l’écusson εpsilon symbolisent l’importance des contributions, même modestes, et la manière dont de multiples éléments s’unissent pour former un tout. En mathématiques, « ε » représente l’infiniment petit. Dans l’immense effort collectif de l’exploration spatiale, qui implique des milliers de participants, tous les rôles, y compris celui de l’astronaute, demeurent modestes mais essentiels.
Au cours de sa mission εpsilon, Sophie réalisera de nombreuses expériences scientifiques, dont plusieurs européennes, mènera des recherches médicales, contribuera à l’observation de la Terre et participera aux opérations et à la maintenance à bord de la Station spatiale internationale.
